About ARION

A Horizon Europe Coordination and Support Action helping European insitutions enable responsible research assessment into everyday practice.

The problem we are solving

Across Europe there is broad agreement that research assessment must recognise more than publications and citations. Frameworks such as CoARA and DORA have set out the principles. Yet the instruments that would make those principles workable — profiles, CV formats, policies and HR tools — have largely been developed separately, with little interoperability. Institutions willing to reform face a scattered toolkit and no clear route through it.

ARION closes that gap. It brings four interventions into one connected, open system, tests them in live assessment with eight pilot institutions, and publishes everything so any organisation in Europe can adopt it — together or one piece at a time.

How we work

Phase 01

Understand

Map institutional readiness, current practice and the gaps that block reform, producing evidence-based typologies and personalised pathways.

Phase 02

Co-design

Build the interventions with institutions, not for them, so they fit real governance, culture and infrastructure.

Phase 03

Pilot

Test the tools in live assessment across eight institutions, then refine them against what actually happens.

Phase 04

Scale

Publish openly, train practitioners, mentor new adopters and hand ownership to lasting networks.
