Reform in practice

Reform in practice — ARION’s four interventions

Four interventions that together let an institution recognise the full range of research contributions.

Four interventions, one connected system.

Each is developed, piloted and scaled with institutions, then published openly so any organisation in Europe can adopt it.

INTERVENTION 01

Digital research profiles

Surface the contributions that metrics miss, drawn from open infrastructures.

Status  In developent

Enhanced researcher profiles draw on open infrastructures so that data stewardship, software, mentoring, leadership and societal engagement appear alongside publications. Instead of a single number, an assessor sees a fuller, verifiable picture of what a researcher actually contributes — assembled from open sources, not re-keyed by hand.

INTERVENTION 02

Narrative CVs

A usable format and guidance, so researchers can describe their contribution in context.

Status  In developent

A practical narrative CV format, with guidance and worked examples, letting researchers describe what they contributed and why it mattered — not just where they published. It gives assessors a consistent, comparable way to read contribution in context, and researchers a fair way to present the whole of their work.

For:  Researchers Institutions Funders

INTERVENTION 03

Institutional model policies

Adaptable policy text that helps institutions take reform straight into their governance.

Status  Planned

Model policies and governance templates give institutions adaptable text they can take into their own statutes, hiring and promotion rules and evaluation procedures. They turn intent into mandate — the point at which responsible assessment stops being a statement of values and becomes how decisions are actually made.

INTERVENTION 04

HR Toolkits

Practical instruments for HR and research managers who run assessment day to day.

Status  Planned

Practical instruments for HR and research managers running assessment day to day, aligned with the ResearchComp competence framework. The toolkits translate policy into workable process — panel guidance, criteria, checklists and templates — so reform holds up in real hiring and promotion rounds.

How the four fit together

The interventions are one system, not a ranked list.

➝ Profiles make contribution visible

➝ Narrative CVs let researchers give it context

➝ Model policies turn that into institutional mandate

➝ HR toolkits carry it into everyday practice

Each works on its own and links to the next, so an institution can enter at any point and add the others over time. All four are openly licensed and designed to interoperate — with each other, and with the systems institutions already run.
